After a two-year absence due to Covid, the SASHOC U-13 Nationals returned with a bang this week, as the country’s top primary school players took the opportunity to flaunt their wide range of developing skills in Stellenbosch.
With the tournament featuring A-section and B-section competitions for boys and girls, a round robin format was used, with no playoffs contested.
Rewarded for their consistency at the four-day event, KZN Coastal won the boys’ A-section, racking up 19 points and finishing just one point clear of Eastern Province in a thrilling battle, while Western Province lifted the girls’ A-section trophy, also raking in 19 points from their seven games.
Host province Boland gave the home crowd plenty to shout about, winning both the boys’ and girls’ B-section tournaments, with the boy’s side completing the national championships as the only team to pick up a full house of points after winning all their matches.
“After the disappointment of having to cancel our national championship events for the last couple of years, we are pleased to see SA’s young hockey stars back in action,” said SASHOC chairperson Wendell Domingo.
“Congratulations to the winning teams at the SAHOC U-13 Nationals, and to all the players who took this opportunity to showcase their ability at national level.
“A special thanks also to all our sponsors and partners – including SPAR, Lift and Grays – who made this event possible, as well as Boland Schools Hockey for hosting a spectacular event.”
